Work and school has got me way behind, so I’m just going to real quickly post winners for the South and later East region 1st round. I wont be doing picks for the 2nd round games as they happen to quickly after the 1st round but I will do more in-depth breakdowns for the sweet 16, possibly a podcast will be up as well.
1 Kansas vs 16 Western Kentucky
Kansas had a stretch of bad losses this season, they’re vulnerable to an upset, but not here.
8 North Carolina vs 9 Villanova
The Tar Heels have been a different team since switching to the the smaller lineup, I don’t think they’re poised to make a very deep run. but they’ll get the W here
Pick: North Carolina
5 VCU vs 12 Akron
If Akron guard Alex Abreu wasn’t suspended I think they have a chance here, without him they won’t be able to get by VCU’s full-court pressure.
4 Michigan vs 13 South Dakota St.
Another trendy upset pick and yeah… I don’t see it, Big-10 player of the year Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. will be too much. Nate Wolters is a dangerous player, but Michigan has five guys just as good. Plus this game is in Michigan.
6 UCLA vs 11 Minnesota
UCLA is without leading scorer Jordan Adams and even with him I think they lose this game. I love Shabazz Muhammad, but he wont be enough. Watch out for Minnesota, they’re an underrated team.
3 Florida vs 14 Northwestern St.
Northwestern St. loves to get up and down the court fast, which plays right into Florida’s hand. Florida had some tough close losses this year, this is their chance to show those losses were a fluke.
7 San Diego St. vs 10 Oklahoma
San Diego St. head coach Steve Fisher goes against former Mountain West coaching rival Lon Kruger. Decent offense in Oklahoma vs outstanding defense in San Diego st.
Pick: San Diego St.
2 Georgetown vs 15 Florida Gulf Coast
Georgetown hasn’t been a good tournament team as of late. Florida Gulf Coast beat Miami this year and there coach is married to a super-model that has to be worth a few points right??
